Bob Sheppard Retires

Just days ago we found out that Bob Sheppard would not be able announce at Opening Day. Today, New York Times is reporting that Bob Sheppard has decided to retire.

Sheppard, 98, was public address announcer at Yankee Stadium from 1951-2007, until a bronchial infection forced him out of the booth for all of 2008. The atmosphere at the stadium will be different without the "voice of god", as Reggie Jackson put it. We wish Sheppard the best of health, as he climbs towards the century mark in age!

Below is a tribute to Bob Sheppard from 2000. A fine tribute to a fine man.

The Yankees have not named a replacement for Sheppard, but it will not be Jim Hall, Sheppard’s longtime backup. Paul Olden will fill in for the two exhibition games at the Stadium this weekend

Interesting that Hall doesn't get the call...

NOT TRUE! The Yankees are denying all of these reports.
Just because the Yankees are denying does not mean it isn't true. The guy
is 98 years old, it isn't a big surprise that he is retiring!

I would love for him to do one more game. Just one more game. Then enjoy his retirement,. And I hope they settle on a replacement with his/her own style. The Sheppard imitations last year were lame.
