Orioles Fans Illogical Booing of Mark Teixeira

As I watched the embarrassment that was opening day for the Yankees, I became more and more confused. Every time Mark Teixiera came to bat, or even touched the ball, he was booed vociferously. Teixiera, the former Ranger/Brave/Angel, angered Orioles fans by snubbing his local team when he signed with the Yankees. I really feel the fans' anger towards Teixeira is illogical.

Teixeira's agent, Scott Boras is pretty well known for taking the highest offer, especially when such a better deal is available. I also don't remember Teixeira ever saying he was going to play in Baltimore. Most of all, Teixeira is only from the area, he has no reason to be loyal to the Orioles. It doesn't make sense.

I'd like to see opinions from some O's fans. Sometimes it's hard to know how an opposing fan base feels about a player. What do you think of the reaction Mark Teixeira recieved at Camden Yards?

As a New York native and lifelong Yankee fan who spent 8 years in Maryland during and after college, I have to point out the simple explanation for Orioles fans.

They are severely misguided about the attractiveness of their city & state as a place to live. Most of them are stuck there either through sheer incompetence or apathy, and want others to share their misery. For whatever reason, they can't wrap their heads around the fact that Mark Teixeira accepted a better offer to play for a better team in a better city, so they call him a "sellout" or a "traitor."

It's pathetic, but it comes with the territory of having a massive inferiority complex about your home state.

Classy response, you really put me in my place, didn't you? You proud of yourself for bringing absolutely nothing of substance to the discussion?

Nice job by you diehard O's fans showing up at Camden Yards tonight by the way. What are there, 300 people there?

I like to see that kind of emotion, especially out of a losing franchise. I took it as good-natured. Money for a baseball ticket is hard to come by these days, and so if they want to come out to Camden Yards to watch a ballgame and let out some of their frustration (about their team and about the tough economic times) on the Evil Empire and one of their astronomically-high salary players, I don't see anything wrong with that, no matter how illogical it may be. They weren't throwing batteries at the guy; they were just booing.

Also, the above commenter might have a goodpoint about overestimating the attractiveness of their city, for Baltimore natives. Perhaps an MD native himself, Tex knows this better than anyone.
FakeIPK, There was one little kid holding a sign that says "Mark, We Hate You", next to a sign that said "Where's A-Roid?" I'm not saying they were hurting him, I just don't really understand the thinking behind this hatred. Again, I called it illogical, not illegal or crossing-the-line.

I'm not sure that a little kid has the capability of harboring such hatred, but certainly his parents are idiots for that. Still, I don't like to lump every O's fan together and judge them on their worst specimen. We don't like it with we're lumped in with the typical Yankee fan, so we probably shouldn't do it with the O's fans by saying that all O's fans are as hateful and illogical as the ones holding up stupid signs.

Honestly for most of them I think it's as simple as, "Hey, you don't wanna play for us, then you're getting booed when your team plays ours!"

I'm willing to accept it. But it takes more than a few for the entire crowd to boo when a ball is thrown to Tex at first.
I think the problem lies more in the fact that there were a lot of rumors about Teixiera playing up his wanting to go to Baltimore and play for his hometown team. Boston is going to boo him for his comments about he always wanted to go to the Yankees and never had real interest in the Red Sox. The Orioles fans just feel shunned because they have absolutely sucked and thought he would come in and help the franchise be relevant again and the fact that he is from the area makes it that much worse.
Yankees will get booed everywhere they play on the road and unfortunatly(which I never could understand), they will sometimes even get booed at home.

I guess the Oriole fans were upset that Teixeria spurned the home town for the big money of the Yankees. Like Jeter always says, boos on the road are like cheers at home.

Teixeria will probably get more of the same tonight, but if he get's a few hits and maybe knocks one onto Eutaw Street, they will die down.

There scary part is what A-rod will be hearing when he comes back next month.
It might have to do with the perception that talk of him wanting to play for the hometown Orioles was used as leverage for a better offer and not a sincere desire to play in Baltimore.

Just a guess but seeing as how his agent is Scott Boras, it wouldn't surprise me.

Eh, what else can bring O's fans out to the park? Certainly not their once proud franchise, now entering its second decade of suckitude.
u know what as a O's fan i can say for me its not so much that he signed on another team its that it was the yanks. every time im at a game n the yanks play i boo each player same with boston, the rays, and the blue jays if ur in the al east ill boo the hell out of u. now it just adds salt to the wound that he is from "the area" aka 10 min outside of bmore if that. and even though it be nice to have his bat i would of been much happier to get a great releif pitcher or even a good one at that if anyone who is a accual fan of the O's knows we need pitching not bats.

Interesting take. Agreed, though. the O's need arms, not expensive bats.
