The NSI Minor League Report: Jorge Vazquez Who?

Thursday 4/23

Jorge Vazquez made his debut in Trenton and supplied all of the offense, driving home all 4 runs with a homer and single. Vazquez is a right handed masher that was a late International FA signing out of Mexico. Keep an eye on him. Zach McAllister got back on track, throwing 7 innings of 2 hit ball, with no walks.

Tampa shutout its' opponent, behind Wilkins de la Rosa's first start from the DL. DLR gave up 1 hit in 4 innings (he's still building up arm strength). Jesus Montero provided the run support, driving in 3.

Charleston lost 8-7. Most of the offense was supplied by their 4th and 5th outfielders, who can't get enough playing time, Dan Brewer (4 for 5) and Matt Lyon (3 for 4)

yanks26 - I enjoy your minor league reports, especially because I'm pretty clueless about our various minor league squads despite being pretty in tune to the happenings of the Yankees big league team. Can you provide any insight on our "can't miss" prospects, assuming we have any?

And please tell me that we have a young catcher who can hit a little in our pipeline...

Jesus Montero and Austin Romine are two highly touted prospects. Montero is I guess as close to a can't miss as there is. He has plus power and hits for average as well, he still needs to work on his defense but he has steadly improved this facet of his game yearly. And he's still very young at 20 years old I believe. He projects to have 30-40 homeruns a year, the negative on this kid is he's 6'4'' 225lbs and possibly still growing and might have to find a new position if he outgrows catcher and with Teixeira at first the outfield or DH might be his future. Either way with prospects like Montero, Romine, Betances, Brackman, McAllistar, Hereidia, A. Jackson, Suttle, Melancon the Yankees future concerning there farm systems looks the best it has in over a decade. Lets go Yanks!!!!
Hey Yanks - Peter Abraham liked your update so much, he decided to write
about it, and as usual, not credit the blog he got the idea from. I have
seen this too much from Abraham lately. What a jerk.
Sorry I didn't read the response sooner. Bryan answered most of catching updates for me. Three years ago, we had no catching propects, now catching is loaded. Montero is a beast with the bat. He has lighthouse power, a smooth compact swing and has great pitch recognition on the off speed stuff. He might wind up at a different position, due to his size. Austin Romine is more of an all round catching prospect who can handle both ends of the game. He doesn't have the lethal power that Montero does, but has power. There's more depth at catching with Kyle Higasoki (sp), Jackson Valera and Chase Weems at the lower levels.

Austin Jackson will be good outfielder, probably in 2010. He's a great athlete (was going to be a point guard with Georgia Tech, before the Yanks plucked him away with a large bonus). We'll have to see how his power develops, as he fills out.

Most of strength is at starting pitching (mostly right handed), which Bryan summed up nicely. Some of the excess talent will eventually be traded for positional prospects or major league fill ins (i.e. Xavier Nady's).
