FINAL 2009 Yankee Stadium Attendance Tracker

With the Yankees having trouble filling the expensive seats, now is as good of a time as ever to start a new Yankee Stadium attendance tracker. For now, we will just post the official attendance (based on the box score), the date & time and the weather conditions for that day. Perhaps sometime in the future we can put it in graphical form, but for now it is just simple numbers. Will the Yankees ever crack the 50,000 mark? We'll have to wait and see...

Remember, this is tracking PAID attendance. The Yankees don't release how many people actually went through the turnstile. For example, on the 4-22-09 day game, the paid attendance was 43,342, but anyone watching on TV knows that the Yankees were lucky if 30,000 were in the stadium.

Ross, I was unable to pull up the Google document you attached. But it's a good idea

If the Yankees can't get a full house tomorrow, with a brand new stadium, a day game, with no school, and beautiful weather, sunny in the low seventies, then something is REALLY wrong.
Lets see them spin UNDER 3 MILLION next season

I think it would be great if you could run this as a comparison to last years attendance, as a percentage of capacity. For example, the second game this year outdrew the second game last year when considering percentage of capacity.

I added the attendance numbers in all 3 games, divided by 3, and multiplied it by 81, and the yankees are on track to getting 3,740,553 total attendance. A far cry from 4,298,655 from last year. In fact, that would be 558,102 less than last year. Ouch. :(

Yeah, the avg attendance is now 45402, on pace to 3,677,562 total. 621093 less than last year.
Just got back from the game. That 42,000 number the Yankees are saying is simply laughable. There were even more empty seats than I had seen so far this year. My guess is the real attendance is more like 35K. Either that, or the Yanks are counting tickets sold as the attendance, and not the folks who actually go through the turnstiles.
The place was half empty tonight. No where near 42,000 people. They need to hire someone who can count.
I believe the American League always announces PAID attendance.

Don't act as if this is anything but what every team does. The Yankees are not unique in announcing PAID attendance. At every game I've ever been to in any stadium, the announced attendance number is definitely higher than what is really at the game.

I am travelling over from Ireland to New York on 7th Aug. I want to see the new Yankee stadium. Will i need to buy tickets on the internet before i fly over or will i be able to buy tickets at the stadium before the game. Planning on spending around $60 to maybe $80. Would like to go to red sox game for the atmosphere but i guess tickets will be scarce. Any advice appreciated.... thanks

If I were a Yankee fan, I would start rooting for the Mets. Another ass whipping by the Sox. 0-5. The new stadium is a joke. No sell out for the Sox/Yanks? Disgracefull. Fenway would have been sold out, even if they added 50,000 more seats and there was a hurricane.

I thought the stadium held 51-52,000 including standing room. If that's true, then they have not sold out the building this year. Including an historic opening day and a Red Sox series. I know Levine and Trost will spin it with smoke and mirrors accounting but the fact remains they have not sold out to date (don't tell me they don't count standing room sales)

The fact remains that they did not sell out an historic opening day. You can't tell me they would not sell SRO tickets if they had sold all the seats. Who would leave money on the table?
You should also put their opponent, it would show a little insight as to which teams had high attendance in the bronx. Like a lot of phillies fans came to the weekend series. Scores and home record wouldnt hurt either.
No sell out last night! Not even 50,000! That was a disgrace!

if they can sell 50, 000 plus tickets for the remaining games with the Mets there is no hope for a sellout this year!

They can spin it it all they want with their smoke and mirrors accounting but the fact remains, no sellout this year to date!

Not even opening day!
not even close to 50,000 against the Mets. Enough said!!!!!!!!
Who cares. In the end the Yankee once again will lead the league in attendance. Also the reason why the attendance will be less than last is because *NEWSFLASH* the stadium holds less people. Think before speaking.
Jordon, you need to think before speaking...

It doesn't matter that the stadium hold less people because they haven't even sold out 1 game.. The stadium could hold a million people and their would be the same amount of people.. at the games..
I'll be in New York in September. I'm hoping to get (cheap) tickets to the Red Sox game. Will this be difficult or will it depend on their standings?

Does anyone know what attendance NYY defines as a "sell out"?
2 replies · active less than 1 minute ago
Noticed yesterday (Sep. 18) the Dodgers passed NYY in season attendance, each having played 75 games. And if yesterday and today is an indication - LA is drawing 52, 53k these days. The Yankees can't even squeeze that many in!! Guess John Sterling can't keep going on about "leading the majors in attendance".
