Some Yankee Fun Facts While Waiting For Saturday Night's Game To Start

All of these notes are compiled daily by the New York Yankees Media Relations Office for the press. We here at NSI can only take credit for the sometimes witty headlines that are underlined.

Grueling April:
  • The Yankees will play on 29 of the next 30 days (next off day is 4/23) and the Yankees’ current nine-game road trip is the longest season-opening road trip in franchise history (high to date: eight games trips in 1918 and 1997).
But At Least The Games Are Winnable:
  • Only seven of the Yankees’ 23 April games are played against teams that finished 2008 with a winning record and the Yankees were 41-40 away from Yankee Stadium in 2008, joining Los Angeles-AL as the only two AL clubs with a winning road record last season.
Bullies In The Pen:
  • Over the last three games, Yankees relievers have combined to toss 10.0 scoreless innings of relief, recording 12 strikeouts with only 3 walks. Prior to Mark Teahen’s single off Mariano Rivera in the ninth inning of Friday’s win at Kansas City, Yankees relievers had not allowed a hit to 30 consecutive batters.
Its No Fluke:
  • In 2008, Yankees relievers combined to strike out a franchise record 535 batters and held opponents to a .235 batting average, ranking third among Major League bullpens.
The K's Are Coming:
  • After recording four strikeouts in their first two games, Yankees pitchers have registered 22 over their last two game. The 22 strikeouts are the most in consecutive games by the Yankees staff since also recording 22 on 7/25-26/08.
The Cano Show:
  • Notoriously known for slow starts, Robinson Cano is on fire to start 2009. Cano is 8-14 with 6 runs scored and 4 walks. In 2008 his first walk didn't come until his 10th game and he didn’t register his fourth walk until his 21st game.
  • Robinson Cano 2009 after 4 games: BA .571 (8-for-14)
  • Robinson Cano 2008 after 4 games: BA .067 (1-for-15)
  • Cano has 27 hits in his last 56 at bats, dating back to 2008… His .482 average over that span is the highest in MLB among players with at least 40AB (That stat courtesy of Elias).
Defense Wins Championships:
  • The Yankees are the only team in the Major Leagues yet to make an error this season.
Birthay Wishes:
  • 1B Mark Teixeira celebrates his 29th birthday today.
