The NSI Minor League Report: Montero Injured

Monday 5/4

Jesus Montero was taken out the game in the 8th inning of the Tampa game with a leg injury. The Yankees are always secretive on the severity of injuries to minor leaguers, so don't expect detailed news.

Scranton won behind a mixed pitching debut by George Kontos. Kevin Russo got back in the lineup with a 4 hit night. Shelley Duncan, who was named IL Batter of the Week, got his 10th home run. Austin Jackson got two hits, to raise his average to .390, but did strike out 3 times. PJ Pilittere had the dubious honor of having 9 runners successfully steal against him (with none thrown out). He's usually very solid in the catch & throw department, so I wouldn't pin that all against him. Two of the runners counting against him were caught in a double steal/run down, but Juan Miranda threw the ball away. The team is now 20-4, and is 6 games ahead in the standing.

Trenton was rained out, Tampa's bats continue to be ice cold , while Charleston lost as well.

Venditte is really hot so far this season. I wish they would move him up to Tampa already. I guess when you throw with two hands there is twice the work that goes into each level though.

Seems like the Yankees are scared to challenge him for some reason.
Surely there's someone who can work with Shelley Duncan to help him take that next step. He's like a really big eighth grader who crushes everyone in junior high and then gets pushed around by the big kids when he reaches high school. Isn't there a "consultant" they can bring in or something???

Some guys are just made for AAA, I guess. That is why they have the term
"he is a quad-A player."
Does it make any sense to dangle him as trade bait at some point? Surely there's a team out there with a reknowned hitting coach (like Texas) who would take a flyer on him...of course, what the hell could we possibly get in return from Texas???
They DFA'd him last season and nobody wanted him. I'm not sure why they would want him a year later.
True, every team in MLB had the chance to get Shelley and all it would have
cost them was a spot on their minor league roster. Every team passed. That
is pretty telling.
The 'consultant' is going to have to teach Shelley how to hit a major league curve and change up. He crushes fastballs, but major leaguers quickly learn how to exploit Duncan's weakness.
