UPDATED: Yankees vs. Mets Subway Series Weather: Friday 6/26 Game - Tarp Off Of The Field, Game Set To Start By 8:15 PM

UPDATE: (7:41 PM) According to Brandon Tierney of 1050 ESPN Radio in New York, the tarp is off the field, and the game will start in a half hour (approximately 8:10 PM):
tarp's off, 30 minutes before we rock n roll...Yanks, 2 of 3.
Meanwhile, Peter Abraham is reporting a start time of 8 PM

UPDATE: (7:14 PM) Another update from Steve, even more encouraging for tonight's game (maybe an earlier start than 8:30?):
Rain starting to end over Bergen County. The worst of the heavy rain is over for Queens County and Citi Field.
UPDATE: (7:09 PM) This via Steve's Twitter account:
For those at Citi, rain is rapidly ending over northern NJ and the Hudson Valley, and will eventually end over Queens in 45 to 60 minutes.
So, we'd expect a start time of around 8:30, if we had to guess.

UPDATE: (6:49 PM): This via Steve, from his great severe weather tracking post at NYNJPAWeather.com...
Encouraging news for the Mets/Yankees game is that the thunderstorms are weakening and the rain should exit in an hour.
Luckily, we have the pleasure of being out of town in Arizona and laying poolside in the Valley of the Sun. Unfortunately, tonight's Subway Series game is being played back home in the new-age Seattle - New York City. We don't typically provide weather updates for Yankees road games, but since this one is being played in rainy NYC we have Steve from NYNJPAWeather.com ready with an unfortunate update:
The game for tonight is certainly in trouble. Strong to severe thunderstorms will move through Queens, New York from 5 PM through 8 PM, which will cause very heavy downpours, strong wind gusts, large hail, and frequent lightning. The threat for showers and thunderstorms will begin to decrease after 8 PM with much drier conditions for the rest of the weekend. Winds will veer from the southwest to west around 10 to 20 mph. Temperatures will fall from the mid 80's to mid 70's through the evening. There is a significant risk for a delay or postponement of this game. However, the rest of the weekend is looking considerably drier with less of a risk of showers and thunderstorms.
This is exactly what the Yankees DON'T need, with CC Sabathia and his tender biceps/ tendinitis set to pitch tonight.

So here we are - more rain set to affect a baseball game in New York City. Color us unsurprised and happy to be in Arizona, even with the 105 degree heat.

UPDATED: Game Day Weather Forecast 6/18, Yankees vs. Nationals - Rain Delay Possible

UPDATE: (5:45 PM): New first pitch time set for approximately 6:30. So much for that day game!

UPDATE: (5:35 PM): First an update on the weather, why more rain keeps coming, and what the Yankees should do, via Steve from NYNJPAWeather.com
These are just minor mid level disturbances south of the main low pressure system, but honestly these showers should not inhibit the Yankees from starting the game. Somerset and Morris Counties are completely dry with little if any development behind them. I should note that the Phillies started under the same conditions, so I'm not sure what's holding them up. At any rate, if the Yankees are waiting for completely dry conditions, they might as well start at 7 PM cause the atmosphere is going to continue to produce these weak scattered showers.
And here is an update from someone AT the game, (AHSchwartz) as of 15 minutes ago:
Cheers as the grounds crew makes an appearance and starts working on the warning track.
UPDATE: (4:15 PM): OK, we lied, Steve has some more:
The rain is basically over for the Bronx. Just a few scattered showers over NE NJ to contend with, but the steady, heavy rain is done. The issue, which I really can't speak on is the condition of the playing field. Very heavy rain can cause a lot of ponding and that may take some time to fix for the grounds grew. As far as what's falling from the sky, the heaviest is done and off to the east.
UPDATE (3:30 PM): One final update:

Rain is coming to an end, but looks like the Yankees field team has a lot of work to do. The 4 PM start time will be free of heavy rainfall.
UPDATE (1:00 PM): Here is the latest from Steve:
The back end of the steady rainfall is over Newark, NJ and moving East-northeast. The steady rain will end abruptly in the next hour to hour and a half. After that the Yankees will be dodging light to moderate showers but should play. So expect a delay maybe until 2:30-3 PM.
We know, we know, enough with the weather updates! So, last night's forecast was Steve's first real clunker of the season, but we'll forgive him and let him jump right back on the horse today. The Yankees unfortunately have a day game, and as anyone who had to commute this morning knows, the weather is pretty terrible out there. Here is the exclusive Yankees game day forecast courtesy of Steve from NYNJPAWeather.com
Well, the heavy rain held off long enough for last night as dry air held out longer than expected. Obviously, that has all come to an end as waves of heavy rain are moving through the Bronx this morning.

There is some good news though. The wave of steady rain currently (8:25 AM) is coming to an end with the back end of the steady precipitation entering eastern Pennsylvania. The steady rain should come to an end around 12 PM to 1 PM, however scattered showers and isolated strong thunderstorms will remain a threat through the afternoon hours.

Regardless, field conditions will be a mess and a delay just to get the field in working order may be needed. Given the fact that The Nationals do not return to Yankee Stadium this year, I wouldn't be surprised if the Yankees and MLB try to wait this out for as long as possible with slightly drier conditions (compared to now) by later this afternoon.

Winds will be from the southeast around 10 to 20 mph, which will blow right to left over Yankee Stadium. Temperatures will range from the mid 60's to lower 70's through the game, but will feel more like the upper 50's to lower 60's due to the wet conditions and wind speed.
As Steve Said, the Yankees and MLB will likely wait this one out, and try to play the game during a dry window. Lets just hope the Yankees can salvage a series win after the most disappointing loss in new Yankee Stadium history.

Game Day Weather: Rain Expected To Impact Wednesday's Yankees vs. Nationals Game

Well, we haven't been checking in much this week (the real world has unfortunately beckoned), and here we are with some bad news. It looks like the rain that was expected to hold off until overnight is RAPIDLY approaching the area, and will affect tonight's game. Here is Steve from NYNJPAWeather.com with the latest:
The rain is moving faster than expected. Expect periods of rain to impact game conditions by at least the third inning. Winds will me from the SE around 10 to 20 mph. Temperatures will fall through the mid 60's.
Obviously, this is Washington's only trip into town, so they will likely do all they can to make sure the game is played. The problem here is that the rain is only going to get worse as the evening progresses. If the game gets postponed or suspended, look for the makeup game to be played at the end of the regular season, depending on if the outcome is meaningful to the standings.

If we receive any new updates from Steve, we will be sure to post them here. We'll be at the game in the Audi Yankees Club, while Nick will be in the Legends seats, getting soaking wet. Score one for the Audi Club!

Home Stand Finale Weather - Lets Hope It is Another Quick Game

UPDATE (3:12 PM): Courtesy of Steve:
Strong thunderstorms are forming over northwestern New Jersey this afternoon and will continue to slowly move southeastward towards the Bronx by later this afternoon. These thunderstorms will be capable of frequent lightning, small hail, wind gusts exceeding 50 mph, and very heavy downpours. Visibility will fall to near zero at times. Thunderstorms will impact the Bronx between the hours of 4:00 PM to 6:30 PM.

Thunderstorms will impact the Bronx between the hours of 4:00 PM to 6:30 PM.

It looks like the Yankees are finally over their Saturday doldrums, as for a second straight week, they won in dramatic fashion on the first day of the weekend. Today is the finale of the longest home stand of the season, and there may be some strong thunderstorms for the Yankees and their fans to contend with. As always, we defer to Steve from NYNJPAWeather.com:
A strong cold front will be approaching the Bronx this afternoon, however the brunt of the showers and thunderstorms will hold off until after 4 PM. As such, I expect partly cloudy conditions through much of the game. A few isolated showers will develop ahead of the cold front and move southwest to northeast, which may clip the Bronx this afternoon. I'll keep an eye on that with updates. Winds will be from the southwest around 5 to 15 mph increasing to 10 to 20 mph in the later innings. This wind blows out at Yankee stadium, especially for left field. Temperatures will range from 78 to 82 degrees.

Use caution driving home after the game as I expect some rather nasty thunderstorms dropping south through the Hudson Valley and right over the NYC metro. These thunderstorms will be capable of frequent lightning, small hail, strong wind gusts over 50 mph, and very heavy downpours. Visibility will drop quickly, so I advise NOT to drive through these storms.

Have a great day!
The lefty aces are on the mound, but they'll have to keep the ball down, as there will be a significant wind out to left field. Five straight games on this home stand have been under three hours in length, and there is no reason to think this game will be an exception. If Sabathia and Hamels pitch like they usually do, this game should be over in plenty of time for people to escape the potentially dangerous thunderstorms. If the pace of the game slows, be aware of the possibility of getting wet.

The girlfriend will be in tow today, but come and visit us in section 428, row 10 if you are at the game! Read the full post, after the jump

Weather Update for May 17, Yankees vs. Twins - Showery Beginning

We're about to start out trek back to the city from the lovely town of Oneonta, NY. While we're driving and enjoying the lovely baritone voice of John Sterling, here is the game day weather forecast, courtesy of Steve from NYNJPAWeather.com:
The cold front is just off the coast this morning and will continue to slowly press eastward through the day. Showers will linger over the Bronx through at least the start of the game, however the heaviest rain is now over. There may be a delay, but this game will be played. Strong high pressure from the Great Lakes will build in through the rest of the afternoon with clearing conditions. Winds will be from the northwest around 10 to 20 mph with gusts to 35 mph. This wind will blow fly balls out towards center and left field. Temperatures through the game will range from 64 to 66 degrees.
Can we make it 3 thrillers in a row? For everyone heading out to the game. we hope so! Read the full post, after the jump

GAME POSTPONED: Game Day Weather Forecast For April 20 - Yankees vs. A's Likely To Be Postponed

UPDATE (3:30 PM): According to the Yankees weather update page, the Yankees vs. A's game on 4/20 has been rained out. http://yankees.mlb.com/nyy/ballpark/weather_update.jsp

As of now, no makeup date has been announced.

UPDATE (3:00 PM): Steve DiMartino has checked in and has the following to say:
If the Yankees wait until 9PM there is a shot [to play the game]. Depends on how well the field dries. The heavy rain should continue through 7 PM.
The Yankees would probably rather wait until 9 PM than have to play a doubleheader, but that would really inconvenience the fans. Don't expect an early decision to be made.

We touched on this topic last night, but now it is the day of the game and the weather forecast is still looking terrible. Here to get us through this soggy week of games is Steve DiMartino, special to NSI from NYNJPAWeather.com. Be sure to check out his website every day - he is an independent meteorologist, but his forecasts are seemingly more accurate than any mainstream weather forecast around. Check out what Steve has to say for today's game, and the rest of the week's games,
Perhaps this rain storm is good news for the Yankee's bullpen as heavy rain through today and into the evening will likely lead to a postponement of the game.. This rainstorm is expected to produce a half inch to as much as two inches of rainfall with the heaviest rainfall expected over the Bronx between 6PM and 10 PM. Obviously, these conditions are not optimal for baseball games. If you are heading out to the Stadium expect winds from the east around 5 to 15 mph with gusts to 30 mph and temperatures in the around 50.

The rest of the series is looking more promising.

A risk of showers will remain on Tuesday evening, however the showers will be widely scattered by the evening hours with generally dry conditions expected over most locations. Although a delay is possible, the game will likely be played. Winds will be from the southwest around 5 to 10 mph. Temperatures will range from 56 to 60 degrees..

On Wednesday afternoon, a risk of showers will still exits but will become isolated through the day. Although a delay is possible, the game will likely be played. Winds will be from the southwest around 5 to 15 mph. Temperatures will range from 58 to 61.
Unfortunately, it looks as if the great weather that blessed the first weekend of games at the new Stadium is long gone. In its place is a soggy atmosphere, ready to ruin baseball games. It should be interesting to see the attendance of these games. This weekend, the Yankees didn't come close to cracking 50,000 people, and they just blasted out an email this morning stating that "tickets are still available" for the Oakland series. Is it possible that they won't crack 40,000 for one of these games?

Rainout Likely For Monday Night 4/20 - Yankees vs. A's

We will have a full game day forecast by Steve DiMartino from NYNJPAWeather.com first thing tomorrow morning. For now, he has been kind enough to pass along this unfortunate update:
I wouldn't bet on the game being played tomorrow as the latest guidance coming in has the heaviest rain is expected to be over the Bronx by rush hour through the late evening hours tomorrow, not good for the game for sure.
As for when the game will be made up - River Ave. Blues pointed out earlier today that both teams have an off day this Thursday, and they also have an off day prior to the next time Oakland comes into town in July. A doubleheader is pretty unlikely, as the Yankees are heading into Boston this weekend and won't want to deplete their pitching staff. In addition, this week's games are not sold out, and the Yankees would love to move one to the peak month of July if weather gives them the excuse.

Our early prediction is that tomorrow night's game will be canceled and tickets will be valid for a makeup game on July 23. Gary in the comments points out that July 23 is not a realistic makeup date because of the following clause in the collective bargaining agreement:
ARTICLE V—Scheduling
C. Additional Scheduling Agreements
(10) No Club shall be scheduled, or rescheduled if practicable, to play more than 20 consecutive dates without an open day, or 21 consecutive dates if necessary to accommodate the Hall of Fame Game. A rained-out game may be rescheduled to an open date in the same series, or to an open date at the end of the same series, if (a) the open date is a road off-day for the visiting Club, and (b) the rescheduling does not result in the home team playing more than 24 consecutive dates without an open day, or 25 consecutive dates if necessary to accommodate the Hall of Fame Game.
And Gary notes:
I wouldn't bet on the July 23 makeup game. If the Athletics were to play a game that day, that would make for 28 consecutive days with a game, violating the Collective Bargaining Agreement. The only way a game happens on 7/23 is if the Athletics waive their right to a rest day but I can't imagine that would happen. Another possibility is a day-night DH Wednesday or a 1pm game on their off-day Thursday.
A Wednesday day/night would make sense logistically for travel purposes, but with the Yankees' lack of long relief, it spells trouble.

We'll keep everyone up to date as the day progresses on Monday with any official announcements from the Yankees. Read the full post, after the jump

New Yankee Stadium Opening Day Weather Forecast

The day is finally here. Today, the New York Yankees officially christen their new $1.6 billion dollar stadium in the Bronx. Last year, opening day was rained out and it caused headaches for many people who make coming to the stadium for the first game of the season a yearly tradition. This year, we have Steve DiMartino of NYNJPAWeather.com contributing exclusive game day forecasts for games that matter the most, so you are prepared for the elements.
New York has been very lucky with weather conditions and opening stadiums! Today, high pressure will provide excellent weather conditions with clear skies, light and variable winds, and seasonable temperatures. Through the game temperatures will range from 59 to 62 degrees range so a light jacket or light sweater would be a good idea. Weather conditions should have little if any impact on the game.
That last sentence is music to our ears. If you are heading out to the big ballpark in the Bronx, rest assured that the weather will be beautiful. Thanks again to Steve for stopping in and doing that for us. It helps us to forgive him for being a Mets fan. Enjoy the game everyone. Read the full post, after the jump

Yankees vs. Orioles Opening Day Weather Report - Special To NSI By Steve DiMartino Of NYNJPAWeather.com

Since it was such a success on Friday, Steve from NYNJPAWeather.com is back to give us another gameday forecast, this time for the 4:05 opening day tilt in Baltimore, MD, between the Orioles and the Yankees. A lot of Yankee fans are making the trek down to Baltimore and probably want to know if the game is going to happen, as plenty of rain is in the forecast. Here is what Steve has to say, exclusively for New Stadium Insider.
Looks like there could be a delay, but they'll get the game in. Here's the forecast:

The heaviest rainfall can be expected before the game as the cold front and developing low pressure system moves through Baltimore between 1 and 3 PM. Showers will linger over Baltimore from 3 to 6 PM as winds shift to the west around 10 to 20 mph with higher gusts. So although a delay will be possible, the worst of the rain will be over by the time the Yankees and O's take the field.

Temperatures will range from the 52 to 59. Temperatures will fall through the period of the game rather quickly into the mid and lower 50's.
So to recap. The heaviest rain will be done by game time, however showers will continue to be a threat through at least 6 PM. Clearing expected thereafter.

A delay in the game is possible, but of course these days MLB will play through anything to get a game in short of a tornado.
Considering the rare sell-out crowd that the Orioles will have at Camden Yards today, the game will probably happen - even if the weather is bad. After a long and exciting offseason, we are ready to embark on what should be a fun journey toward championship No. 27 in the Bronx. Stick with us for the ride! Read the full post, after the jump

What Happens If Friday's Exhibition Against The Cubs Is Rained Out?

Unfortunately, as is the case with most early Spring games in the Northeast, there is a chance that Friday's game will be affected by weather. As of now, the Yankee ticket office is not sharing their contingency plan, if one exists. When asked about the weather situation, our source in the ticket office replied "I hope it doesn't rain Friday, I'm not sure what the plan would be."

It is unlikely that the Yankees would schedule an exhibition double-header on Saturday, so refunds or credits to other games would have to be offered. That being said, how real is the threat of the game being canceled on Friday? Lets once again defer to Steve DiMartino from NYNJPAWeather.com:
The low level jet is expected to supply additional lifting and moisture transport at 850 and 950 MB by Friday afternoon as well. North of the warm front, expect scattered showers with a period of steady moderate rain in the afternoon. However, south of the warm front, a break in the precipitation is expected with the potential for even a break in the overcast. Should this happen, there is potential for temperatures to spike quickly above forecasted high temperatures. A line of showers and strong to severe thunderstorms will follow the cold front passage by the afternoon. The thunderstorms will be capable of heavy downpours, strong wind gusts, frequent lightning, small hail, and possibly even an isolated tornado. The upper level set up is very similar to last Sunday.
It will all depend on the timing of the steady rain, and then the thunderstorms. As of now, it looks like the batch of steady, game canceling rain will come through first, and we will be left with scattered thunderstorms in the evening. If we had to guess now, batting practice has a high chance of be canceled, but the game will occur - with the potential for the tarp making its new Yankee Stadium debut if some of those heavy thunderstorms come through. The good news is that weather looks great for the workout day on Thursday, with partly cloudy skies and temperatures in the lower 60's.

Obviously, even two days out, plenty of things can change with the weather. Be sure to check in with Steve over at NYNJPAWeather.com and you can always come back here on Friday for the latest updates and the radar on the sidebar. Read the full post, after the jump

5/20 weather update - steady rain likely

UPDATE (5/20 5:42 PM): The rain is quickly moving through the area as can be seen in the radar below. What lies in its wake is cold, drizzly, damp conditions. The bulk of the rain will be through the area by 7:00 - 7:30, but it will remain uncomfortable. If I was a betting man, I would wager that the game will be played. I would certainly suggest not to play A-Rod in these conditions though (as I mentioned below).

The image “http://radblast-aa.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/radar/WUNIDS_map?station=DIX&brand=wui&num=6&delay=15&type=N0R&frame=0&scale=1.000&noclutter=1&t=1211319624&lat=0&lon=0&label=you&showstorms=0&map.x=400&map.y=240&centerx=400&centery=240&transx=0&transy=0&showlabels=1&severe=0&rainsnow=0&lightning=0” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

It is going to be tough to get tonight's game in, at least according to this radar:

radar accurate as of 5/20/08 at 3:20 PM

Even if they do play the game, Joe Girardi should seriously consider scratching the returning A-God from the lineup. All we need is for his quad to tighten up a bit and then have him slip on wet grass and be out for another month.

I will update this as I see fit, but I doubt the game will start on time, if at all.

Tickets to the game tomorrow night? You might want to make other plans

Rain

The weather forecast is pretty terrible for Friday evening against the rival Rays. Yea, thats right, they're a rival now. Any time the benches clear, teams become rivals.

Anyway, I can't provide any good news for those of you with tickets for tomorrow night's game:

there is the potential for an inch to an inch and a half from
coastal Connecticut and just north and NYC and points south...with
lower amounts to the north and west...for tonight into Saturday
night. Most of the rain will likely fall late tonight into Friday
morning...and this could cause ponding in the usual poor drainage
and low lying areas.
The good news is, the heaviest rain is going to be overnight tonight into Friday morning. The bad news is that the rain is going to linger into Saturday and the Yankees will most likely let the early day rain affect their postponement decision.

If I were a betting man, I'd say that tomorrow night's game will be rained out. Be sure to check the radar on the right side of the page tomorrow evening, as I will be traveling and won't be able to provide up to the minute updates.

Will there be baseball tonight?

Well, here we go again.

The Yankees made the odd decision to postpone the season opener until tonight at 7:05 and because of that missed out on a day of mostly dry conditions. Of course, as 7:05 approaches, the skies are ready to open once again. Here is the situation:

The image “http://radblast-aa.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/radar/WUNIDS_map?station=DIX&brand=wui&num=6&delay=15&type=N0R&frame=0&scale=1.000&noclutter=1&t=1207084210&lat=0&lon=0&label=you&showstorms=0&map.x=400&map.y=240&centerx=400&centery=240&transx=0&transy=0&showlabels=1&severe=0&rainsnow=0&lightning=0” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.
(click for full-size as of 5:10 PM)

You will notice that the heavy, convective activity is moving south of the Bronx or simply dissipating all together. That is good news if you want to see some baseball tonight.

There is, however, scattered light rain which shows up much better on the weather.com radar

Anyway, I have no doubt that there will be baseball in the Bronx tonight. I can't totally rule out a delay at the onset, but they will play the game.

I managed to wrangle myself a ticket to the game tonight, so I hope to have my first post-game Yankee Stadium rant of the year up on the blog tomorrow morning. If you are at home, be sure to check out our Yankee message board and take part in our inaugural game thread.

Get your raincoats and umbrellas ready for Yankees Opening Day 2008

Rain

Update (3/30 12:19 PM): Well, things aren't really looking any better. This rain event isn't going to be a deluge, but the chance of precipitation is going to increase as the day moves on. In addition, it is going to be cold with temperatures not escaping the middle 40's. As for Tuesday, it is definitely going to be warmer, but there might not be as much sun as was originally expected. My opinion is still that the Yankees should make an early decision on Sunday night to postpone Monday's game. Tuesday will be a better day for baseball, if not perfect. We'll see what the Yankees do.

UPDATE (3/29 10:54 AM): Models seem to be coming more into agreement on a rain event on Monday that would wash out the home opener. The only good news is that Tuesday looks to be clearing out by Mid-morning and the potential for temperatures to reach the 60 degree mark. The Yankees would be smart to pay close attention to this and make an early cancellation on Monday if possible. That way at least people won't head to the Stadium and then have to come back AGAIN on Tuesday. The Yankees have made some bad decisions when it comes to calling games (remember the Detroit ALDS game in 2006?), so I wouldn't count on the Yankees doing anything smart.

One of the main reasons that I am never too upset about my season ticket plan not including Opening Day is because of the crappy weather that is bound to happen each year at the beginning of April.

It looks like 2008, the final season at the current Yankee Stadium, will be no different.

rain
Monday
Rain likely. Highs in the lower 50s. Chance of rain 60 percent.

As it stands now, Monday is set to be a washout. However, we are still over 72 hours out, so there is plenty of room for forecast errors.

Keep an eye on the weather for the Bronx

6/12/07 - t-storms in the vicinity

I am fairly certain that this game will be played, barring the grounds crew being retarded* because the T-Storms seem to be clearing out of the area. There is one more severe T-Storm cluster in CT heading down into the metropolitan NYC area, but I think once that goes through, we are in the clear.

(click on that to see it in motion - but it is not a static, live image. Click on the link at the right side of the page to see the UPDATED image).

I'm going to venture a guess and say the game starts at around 7:45 PM.

I will be attending the game today. I wasn't originally planning to go but my softball game was rained out. I'll be a better stadium insider than Nick and actually post a recap after the game tonight.
