The 9/11 Bag Rules Are Back For The Playoffs

It wasn't too long ago that we lauded the Yankees for finally relaxing their ridiculous post-9/11 bag rules that banned anything other than a purse or diaper bag from entering the grounds of Yankee Stadium. As Marc Carig reports, the Yankees are once again changing their tune, just in time for the playoffs.

This is definitely frustrating for fans, especially those heading straight to the game from work (the games start at 6:07 PM). However, the Yankees are likely responding to warnings from the FBI a couple of weeks ago regarding vague terror threats to stadiums. It is better to be safe then sorry, and the local bowling alleys that offer bag check will probably be happy, but isn't this some form of the terrorists winning?

Nah, I don't think so. The terrorists would win if baseball canceled the games.
Any idea if they're restricting clear backpacks as well? I've been using one for years and have had no trouble, despite the ban on other bags.

I figured they'd just be reverting back to the old rules, but the release
from the Yankees indicates otherwise:

During the 2009 postseason, in compliance with a directive from the
NYPD and MLB, backpacks will not be permitted in Yankee Stadium, regardless
of size.

The Yankees reserve the right to inspect any bags, clothing or other
articles prior to entry into the Stadium and prohibit entry or require
removal of any items the Yankees deem inappropriate or potentially
injurious to the Stadium, other patrons or field personnel.

Wouldn't the terrorists win if they you know actually blew something up?

With that said I am pretty sure limiting bags won't deter a terrorist attack.

The fact that we are inconvenienced and can't go straight to the game from
work with a bag because of the threat of terrorism means the terrorists
have scored a minor victory in my eyes. We can't have the simple
convenience of bringing a bag to the game that might carry a change of
clothes, a wallet, a cell phone charger, etc. It sucks.
I just spoke with someone in the Yankees' security office. No backpacks, WHATSOEVER, including the clear ones. Argh. I'm not coming from work in the city, but I still like to have a dry shirt, especially considering it might rain. What? I can buy one there? Whew. ;-)
