Rain or Shine - See What We See Tonight At Yankee Stadium - Qik.com Live Stream

Since it was such a SMASHING success last weekend at Citi Field, we have decided to bring back the Qik.com live stream. Yes, the quality is grainy and washed out. Yes, you have all seen the fancy stadium tours by the mainstream media. However, with our Qik.com live stream, you get the once in a lifetime experience of seeing what we see as we venture into the new Yankee Stadium for the first time .

Last weekend at Citi Field, our seat happened to be a terribly obstructed one. You never know what we'll come across tonight.

Since we won't be able to get to the stadium for batting practice this evening, we will have a more extensive Qik.com live stream on Saturday morning. Also, watching our live stream from Yankee Stadium is probably not what most people consider fun Friday night plans.

This will be our last post of the day barring an announcement of a rainout of the Yankees vs. Cubs game, or some other breaking news.

Barring poor 3G reception or technical difficulties, the above video will stream LIVE when I am recording. Keep New Stadium Insider up in a browser window and you will see what we see! It is that simple. Feel free to comment on this post, as we will be creating a new post for every live stream. Read the full post, after the jump

Probable Starters For Stadium Openers Vs. Cubs and updated information about Bob Sheppard

Enough talk about obstructed seats, ticket pre-sales and urinals. Let's talk baseball!

We're a mere 8 days away from the opening of the BRAND NEW Yankee Stadium, with two exhibition games on tap against the lovable losers, the Cubs. Ok, they're actually pretty damn good nowadays. Could this be a World Series preview?

For those of you headed to the stadium to see its first live action next weekend, here's what you can expect as far as probable starters go:

Friday, April 3: Ted Lilly @ Chien Ming Wang
Saturday, April 4: Rich Harden @ AJ Burnett (Andy Pettitte slated to appear as well)

Meaningless as the game may be, that Saturday match-up has me salivating. Those two fire-ballers are sure to make a few guys look silly. Let's hope Burnett doesn't get too "geeked"(Thanks Michael Kay) for this meaningless game.

My question for all who plan on attending is this: What are you most excited about experiencing in the New Stadium? Me? I'm just hoping we can put the "YMCA tradition" behind us. Actually, I'm hoping we can put it in a time machine, and send it back to the 70's where that annoying song belongs. Please Yankees. No one likes it anymore.

UPDATE (3/26 11:00 AM): Via River Ave. Blues there is word that Bob Sheppard will be making his triumphant return as PA announcer for the April 3 exhibition game against the Cubs. We have always criticized El Capitan, Derek Jeter for insisting on a recording of Sheppard's voice for his at bats while Sheppard was out sick. That being said, a Yankee game just isn't the same without Bob Sheppard's impeccable pronunciations. No offense to Jim Hall, who did an admirable job and will likely be the permanent replacement once Sheppard is forced into retirement due to turning 130 years old.

UPDATE (3/26 4:22 PM): Via Newsday is word from Sheppard's family that he won't be able to make it back, even for the April 16th home opener. We are aware that Bryan Hoch was merely responding to a "mailbag" question, but that was some pretty shoddy reporting.

The first event at United States Taxpayer (Citi) Field in Flushing - college baseball?

As we are all aware of by now, the Yankees are hosting the Chicago Cubs for two exhibition games in their new Stadium in early April. I have already made my feelings known on the issue; I think those games are going to make the actual season opener anticlimactic. Now that my season ticket plan doesn't include opening day, I'm fine with the exhibition games - I'll get first dibs on the exhibition games at a cheap price as a season ticket holder, and I'll enjoy the new surroundings before the official opening on April 16.

The Mets have a different plan in mind for their new park. Apparently, the first event held at Citi Field will be a college baseball game between the St. Johns Redstorm and the Georgetown Hoyas. Word is that tickets will be $5 for students and they will have the chance to purchase the tickets before Mets season ticket holders. Mets fans will likely lament the fact that they plunked down thousands of dollars for season tickets and won't even get the first crack at tickets for the first baseball game ever played at the new stadium. After all, everyone loves the "new car" smell.

Unfortunately, the Mets have made the same mistake as the Yankees and plan to cheapen their actual home opener even more than the Yankees. While the Yankees have the lovable loser Chicago Cubs in town for a couple of meaningless games, the Mets have invited everyone's favorite bandwagon - the Boston Red Sox.

I would love an explanation of what benefits come with inviting marquee teams for meaningless exhibition games when opening a new stadium. Years from now when memories fade, I would wager that Mets fans remember the Red Sox exhibition games as the true opening of their new stadium and Yankee fans remember the Cubs exhibition games for the same reason. Apparently I'm not the only one with these feelings - Steve from WasWatching.com voiced similar concerns this past August.

The Yankees throw season ticket holders a bone with exhibition ticket prices

The Yankees did the smart thing today and announced visibly reduced prices for the April 3 and April 4 exhibition games that will open up the new Stadium.

According to this release, full season ticket holders will get the games for free, while partial plan holders will have the opportunity to purchase bleacher tickets for 25 cents and grandstand (upper deck) tickets for $1.10. Apparently, these were the prices back in 1923 for the opener at the old Stadium.

This is a nice gesture, but it would have had a bit more impact if it was the first regular season game. This is yet another aspect of these exhibition games that are going to take away from the regular season opener. I may or may not have gotten up on this soapbox before.

Its official - Cubs to open up the new Stadium with two exhibition games

The news comes courtesy of NJ.com - The Cubs will officially usher in the new era of Yankee Stadium with two exhibition games in early April.

While exciting, it is also a bit disappointing. The first regular season game at the new Yankee Stadium is bound to be anticlimactic after these two games are played only two weeks earlier. Before you laugh, these "meaningless exhibitions" will have a lot more meaning than most. Lou Piniella will be back in town, along with old friend Alfonso Soriano representing the lovable loser Chicago Cubs. Tickets will likely be reasonably priced, although the ticket office is not yet releasing ticket information - meaning more real fans will be in the house that Big Stein built. April 3rd will have the feel of opening day night (the game starts at 7:05 PM] at the Stadium, a cool early early Spring evening, full house at the big ballpark in the Bronx. But it will only be a dress rehearsal.

The bottom line? This game will end up being a little too fun, taking all of the anticipation out of the season opener in the new Yankee Stadium. Yes, most teams warm up their new ballparks with exhibition games, but these are the Yankees we are talking about in the greatest city in the world. That game on the 16th should really be the day they break in the new digs.
