The NSI Minor League Report: Hughes Fights The Elements

Sunday 4/12

Phil Hughes had a difficult time pitching with a howling wind and temperatures in the 30's. He needed 22 pitches to get his first out. With runners on 1st and 2nd and no outs, Hughes got out of the first inning unscathed. He needed 22 pitches to get the next 7 outs. Phil gave up 3 runs in 6 innings, two of them via solo home runs (one was wind blown). Hughes had no feel for his curve, but hung in with his best cutter so far, and a good 4 seamer and change up.

Austin Jackson continued his hot hitting in the new league, going 2 for 4, with 2 walks and no strikeouts. Juan Miranda went 3 for 6, and Kevin Cash went 3 for 3 with a homer. Mark Melancon continues to excell, getting 4 strikeouts, in 1 2/3 innings (with no hits or walks).
