Brian Cashman On What It Takes To Run A Winning Franchise

"Essentially, the decision-maker needs to have a very successful management team that exposes him to all sides," Cashman says. "I think you have to have a team that scouts, because the bottom line is players with big tools win championships. Statistical analysis comes into play in defining the reality of the performance. Trends that show risk, injury, regression -- maybe you can catch that earlier because it's definable … But I don't think you need a former player or an Ivy Leaguer. You need someone with a high degree of common sense that surrounds himself with a strong team to run an efficient business. You have to have a blend, and he'll gravitate toward the best possible solutions."
- Brian Cashman

We pride ourselves on not being a link-aggregating blog, but every once in a while, an article comes around that demands to be linked to. The above quote was by Brian Cashman, speaking about the "baseball revolution" led by Billy Beane, and presented to the world in Michael Lewis' book, Moneyball. Howard Bryant of ESPN.com concocts a wonderful story that chronicles the rise of Billy Beane (and Moneyball) as well as the struggles the Moneyball movie is having getting off the ground.

We link to it here because Brian Cashman, Yankees General Manager is a voice of reason throughout the article, dropping awesome one-liners such as "The higher up the tree the monkey climbs, the more of his ass you can see."

Whether you are a "stat guy" or an "old baseball guy," you will definitely enjoy this article. Do yourself a favor and check it out.

OK, So Who's The Wise Guy Who Stole The 1952 Sign From Behind The Bleachers?

It seems that the Yankees have some petty thievery to investigate. At some point since the All-Star break, the sign commemorating the 1952 championship season has been stolen from behind the bleachers at the new Yankee Stadium.

Thanks to the grainy screen-grab below (courtesy of AHSchwartz on Twitter), we can deduce that the sign went missing between July 6, and July 17.

We have already dispatched the Hardly Boys to investigate this heinous act. In the meantime, take a look at the numbers that Mickey Mantle put up in 1952 (his age 20 season), to help lead the Yankees to their 4th consecutive title. Wouldn't it be nice to watch a 20 year old put up numbers like that in the big leagues? What would Jesus (Montero) do? Too soon? Read the full post, after the jump

NYY Steak Review - Expect To Leave With A Full Belly And Empty Pockets

This review has been a long time coming. We took our first trip to NYY Steak back in May, but didn't share our experience as we did the unthinkable and had seafood. This past Saturday we returned to NYY Steak with plans for an NSI review fresh on our minds.

Our original intention was to head over to NYY Steak after the last out of the game. Unfortunately, the restaurant was unable to guarantee a reservation until 6PM. So, when Alfredo Aceves reverted back to Mexican League form, it was time for a late lunch/early dinner steak feast.

As expected, rumors of a packed house at the restaurant were greatly exaggerated - the place was a ghost town. Granted, it was the 8th inning of a fast-paced game so many fans were still in the seats. However, we can safely report that even as we left the restaurant after the game was over, it was still more than half empty. Because of this, we were immediately seated upon arrival which is always a positive when going out for a nice meal. (lots of pictures follow, so we'll have to insert a jump here).

We were seated at a table with a great view of a flat screen HDTV showing the end of the game, and the deconstruction zone formerly known as Yankee Stadium II. Unfortunately, we were also seated directly behind a well-dressed but extremely smelly gentleman. A typical high-end restaurant might not allow someone dripping with sweat to sit down at their meticulously manicured tables. However, the business-casual dress code at NYY Steak is barely enforced, as the overpriced establishment is wary of turning down any potential business that walks through the door. Therefore, expect some smelly company when visiting NYY Steak after a mid-summer day game. Just something to think about before dropping a couple of bills on a "fancy" steak dinner.

During our first trip to NYY Steak, we had multiple servers, all willing to take their time and explain the restaurant, as well as the menu. In the 2 months since our last trip, the shine seems to have worn off a bit. There were plenty of servers, but only one was at our beckon call. We were poured the special NYY Steak tap water (the product of some super-fancy charcoal filtration system), but the accompanying story describing the filtration system was missing. Perhaps we looked like stadium insiders, eager to shove food in our faces?

Apparently we gave off that vibe for our entire meal. Part of the allure of a fancy meal is the pacing at which you are served. A satisfying fine dining experience is one that allows you to enjoy each portion of your meal slowly, but with the next course seamlessly served when you are ready. Timing is always tricky, but when someone is spending a couple of hundred dollars on dinner for two, they don't want their $15 drinks pushed up against their $12 salad appetizer, and squeezed between their $9 side dishes and $54.50 porterhouse steak. Sadly, that is just what happened to us at NYY Steak.

We'll admit that the pretzel bread on baseball diamond plates with mustard and cheese flavored butter was a nice touch (and delicious).

However, by the end of our meal, we realized that the restaurant had the atmosphere and service of Mickey Mantle's, food quality somewhere between Outback and Ruth's Chris and the prices of BLT Prime - an interesting, but ultimately unsatisfying experience.

On the positive side, you will leave the restaurant with a full stomach. From the $7 French Onion Soup to the mammoth 28 oz. porterhouse steak for $54.50, prices are large and in charge, but so are the portions.

The quality of the creamy mashed potatoes and the porterhouse steak is definitely better than what you can get at Outback Steakhouse, but didn't measure up to the appetizers and main courses at the other fine dining restaurant in Yankee Stadium - The Audi Yankees Club. This was not completely unexpected, since the Audi Yankees Club's food is supplied by the underrated Lobel's of New York (already famous in the new Yankee Stadium for their great $15 steak sandwich). This porterhouse shouldn't be completely ignored - it is huge, the flavor is very good, the chefs cook it to the right temperature and it is tender enough to cut through without any trouble. It just lacks any unique qualities that set it apart from any other nice steakhouse.

Any way you slice it, this steak for $54.50 is bordering on a rip-off. The Yankee Stadium premium just isn't worth it here, and we wonder how NYY Steak can expect to be profitable during the offseason in a city so rich in upscale steakhouses.

The Menu in Depth

One of the more hyped menu options at NYY Steak is the lobster mac & cheese. This particular style of mac & cheese seems to be ubiquitous at steakhouses as of late, and NYY Steak is no exception. Unfortunately, their version is disappointingly subpar. Perhaps it is just our taste, but the bread crumbs sprinkled on top are a bit excessive. Our idea of a delicious mac & cheese is one that is creamy, warm and gooey. Breadcrumbs are worthy ingredients in some versions of mac & cheese, but they should be a bit more subtle in lobster mac & cheese.

Texture can easily be excused if the taste of the dish exceeds expectations. Unfortunately, garlic flavor overwhelms the subtle taste of lobster and the breadcrumbs overwhelm the cheese. The balance of the dish is off, and it is only memorable for the bad breath that it leaves in its wake.

Some people who frequent steakhouses are hesitant to go too heavy on seafood during their meal. In their opinion, patrons at a steakhouse are more likely to go with red meat, leaving the freshness of the seafood in doubt. NYY Steak assures guests that all of their clams, oysters, crab, lobster and fish are flown in daily to ensure freshness. On our first trip back in May, we enjoyed a perfectly cooked grilled tuna chateaubriand. We can vouch for the freshness of the seafood, as it was the one highlight from our two trips to the restaurant.

Fortunately, there are some interesting desert options, especially the "NYY Steak 151 Volcano". The vanilla bean ice cream covered with Heath Bar crunch flambéed tableside with a shot of 151 rum is enough to get a lightweight drunk and a an ice cream lover on a sugar high. It doesn't come without a price, however, coming in at $11.

The Verdict

Just like the rest of the new Yankee Stadium, the goal of NYY Steak seems to be to wow aesthetically, and scrimp functionally.

There are flatscreen TVs embedded in the mirrors of the bathrooms, but the paper towels are the same cheap brown paper products from the upper deck restrooms. The signatures of famous Yankees around the walls and the numerous HDTVs are impressive, but the view out the window of peeling paint on the elevated subway platform is permanently hideous.

We definitely won't go as far as telling you not to try out NYY Steak. As far as "premium" eating options at Yankee Stadium go, NYY Steak is the most accessible. To enjoy the Legends Suites, and the luxury suites you will need to be a high-roller, or know one. To go to dinner at The Audi Yankees Club, you need to be a member, or have a hook-up for a day pass. At NYY Steak, you can walk right in and spend your hard-earned money without any affiliation. Be aware, however that if each person gets an alcoholic drink, an appetizer, a steak, a side, and a desert you can expect to spend over $200 after the tip.

As an alternative for a dinner that is of even better quality and slightly cheaper, take the 25 minute subway ride to Grand Central Station and enjoy a meal at Michael Jordan's Steakhouse. The portions are smaller, but so are the prices, and the atmosphere far exceeds what you will get at NYY Steak.

Didn't get to try but wish we had:

The 10 oz. Prime NYY Steak Burger.

Described as 10 oz. of USDA Prime ground sirloin & chuck, bacon, choice of cheese and served with steak fries, this burger looked delicious when we saw it on the HD video board during a rain delay earlier this season. Unfortunately, it is only on their lunch menu (served until 4 PM), so we didn't get to try it out on either of our trips to the restaurant.

NYY Steak can be reached by telephone at 646-97-STEAK and on the web at http://www.nyysteak.com

Wet Yankees Fans Will No Longer Receive Reimbursement For Their Patience

So far in 2009, 3 games at the new Yankee Stadium have already been postponed, and a whopping 8 games have been delayed (information courtesy of our handy Yankee Stadium attendance tracker, as well as Yankees.com). Typically, if a game is delayed more than 2 hours, the Yankees will offer some kind of reimbursement to the inconvenienced fans who show their undying devotion. At the very least, they usually allow fans to upgrade their seat location during the rainy game, and sometimes offer an equal number of tickets to another game during the current or following season.

On Thursday night, the Yankees were playing a makeup game for a postponed game in April, and par for the course, rain was in the forecast. So much rain, in fact, that the game was delayed for a whopping 2:43, starting at 9:48 PM on a work-night. The newly minted "Yankees Weather" Twitter account was useless (you're better off checking our twitter account for reliable updates) and the fans in attendance were victims of an unfortunate season of weather - receiving nothing for their troubles. Security was checking for ticket stubs (even in the sparsely populated bleachers), and an announcement regarding complementary tickets to another game never came.

We were able to reach a reliable source in the Yankees ticket office, and this is what they had to say about reimbursement for future games affected by rain:
I doubt they'll do anything... I think honestly, they are going to try and play every game even if they have to wait 3 hours to get it in, as they don't have a lot of open dates left on the calendar (since they've already got two games rescheduled in Sept). I think I got home around 2am. Not much fun for anyone involved. Ticket availability is just so limited that we can't really invite people back for another game (as we did for the 6/18 game) as we are sold out of the terrace, bleachers and grandstand for the rest of the season.
If rain is in the forecast for a game you are set to attend, your best bet is to wait out the weather until an announcement is made regarding the game. Otherwise, you may leave early like many did on Thursday night and not have the opportunity to return for another game. Read the full post, after the jump

NSI Game Day Weather Forecast - 7/23/09 Yankees vs. A's - Major Threat Of Rain Delay Or Postponement

Update (6:30 PM): From Steve:
The steady, heavy rain is ending over much of NJ with the western edge over coastal/ eastern NJ. The surface low is starting to move east along with the rain shield at any expected slow pace. The edge of the heavy rain should reach the Bronx in rougly 2 hours. As far as the game, personally I would have cancelled already.

The mid to late evening should feature drying conditions with only a few lingering showers.
Update (3:25 PM): Steve has checked in via email to let us know that if the Yankees wait to start until 8:30 PM, they should be able to get the game in.

Update (1:10 PM): Just realized that the Yankees have a Twitter page for weather updates! Follow @YankeesWeather for the latest (this replaces the Yankees weather updates page on Yankees.com).

UPDATE (12:30 PM): Steve checks in with the following:
Forecast is going to plan so far. Bronx will have periods of heavy rain but not as bad as points to the south. If I was running things I'd postpone now. Why risk injury? However the rain will taper off this evening from NW to SE which will cause them to wait out the storm.
Our response to that is because they don't want to have to play a doubleheader!

Welcome back to April 20th! The Yankees and A's are once again ready to start a series in the Bronx, but just like in April, the weather gods have other plans. There is significant rainfall in the forecast which is likely to affect your plans if you are heading out to the Yankees game this evening. Luckily, we have Steve DiMartino of NYNJPAWeather.com on board to tell us everything that we need to know.

Game Today: Start time 7:05 PM vs Oakland

Wind Direction This EveningWind Direction This Evening

The forecast for the game this evening is basically like walking a tight rope as the Bronx will be right on the edge of the steady, and at times, heavy rainfall. The heaviest rainfall will remain to the east of Yankee Stadium this evening, however showers will remain a threat through this evening. The individual showers that will move through the Bronx this evening will be capable of heavy downpours. Winds will be from the east and northeast around 5 to 15 mph, increasing to 10 to 20 mph through the game. Temperatures will range from 71 to 68 degrees. So there is a very high threat for some long delays at Yankee stadium this evening with a potential for a postponement.

Rest of the series:

Conditions will be far better for the rest of the series compared to tonight.

A cold front will move through the region on Friday evening with scattered showers and thunderstorms. A delay to the start of the game is possible, however as the evening progresses drier conditions can be expected with a west to southwesterly wind. Temperatures will range from 75 to 72 degrees.

High pressure will dominate on Saturday afternoon with the Yankees playing at 1:05 PM. Expect dry conditions with a westerly wind around 5 to 10 mph. Temperatures will range from the upper 70’s to mid 80’s through the game.

On Sunday, the Yankees play at 1:05 PM once again. A cold front will approach the Bronx, however rain is expected to hold off until the late afternoon hours. Much of the game should be played rain free with a southwesterly wind around 5 to 15 mph. Temperatures will range from the upper 70’s to mid 80’s.

Steve is a lot more optimistic than we are about tonight's game being played, but he is the meteorologist, and it seems that things have taken a jog to the east (offshore) since we looked at the weather last night. At that time, the National Weather Service had a flood watch in effect, meaning fans will be weary of travel and those making the decision regarding cancellation of the game might be quick with their trigger finger. If the game gets postponed tonight the Yankees will have to decide whether to have a doubleheader on Friday or Saturday, as the A's are already making their second and final trip into the Bronx this season. Tickets will likely be good for the postponed game, which will be part of a day/night doubleheader. Hopefully we won't need to worry about that scenario.

If you are heading out to tonight's game, be sure to have an umbrella, a poncho, and plenty of money for concessions - it might be a long night. Read the full post, after the jump

A-Rod, Pettitte and Joba Spend A Day In The Park For A Good Cause

"Hope Week" activities continued today, with Andy Pettitte, Joba Chamberlain and Alex Rodriguez showing their philanthropic side. Today's story is a touching one, and it takes place right in our old stomping grounds - Greenwich Village:
A child with cerebral palsy who is confined to a wheelchair and unable to communicate through conventional speech became an inspiration to his Little League teammates by dressing in uniform, sitting in the dugout with them and giving high-fives as necessary. This season, the team won the league championship. Additionally, his father is the inventor of revolutionary equipment that allows non-verbal individuals to communicate in new ways. Yankees players will meet the child and his best friends for lunch at a local eatery. Afterwards, everyone will go to the local Little League field to meet the child's teammates and other children with cerebral palsy. Yankees players will then give a talk about baseball and sportsmanship before holding a brief baseball skills clinic. The child and his teammates will attend the Yankees game that evening.
A stadium insider correspondent was on hand to capture photos of the special moments (after the jump).

There are some questions to be asked about the shameless self-promotion surrounding "Hope Week." Celebratory logos have been painted on the field at Yankee Stadium and all stadium employees are forced to wear "Hope Week" buttons - even though half of them probably don't know or care what "Hope Week" is. Last night between innings, the couple being honored was interviewed on the video board and had clearly been given talking points by the team, heaping well-deserved praise on the Yankees in a very rehearsed manner. The experience at the stadium stunk of the Yankees turning very generous and genuinely thoughtful activities into a PR stunt. What is the sense of promoting "Hope Week" other than a means of patting themselves on the back? Fans can't donate to "Hope Week" and they aren't invited to join in on the activities.

All of that aside, our Stadium Insider correspondents had a firsthand look at how some of the Yankees star players are dealing with their mandatory participation. From the photos above, you can see that they passed with flying colors. According to those on the scene, A-Rod held the child's hand the entire time, while Pettitte and Joba were all smiles. It is undoubtedly a day that the kids in Greenwich Village Little League will never forget, especially the boy with cerebral palsy.

"Hope Week" seems to be one of the best things the Yankee organization has done for a long time, but they'd be smart to tone down the rhetoric and act like they've been there before. Isn't that the Yankee way?

IMPORTANT ADDITION - Bryan Hoch points out how you can make a difference in his "Hope Week" story.
The Yankees have encouraged those inspired by the HOPE Week stories to look to New York City's NYC Service (www.nyc.gov/service) and President Barack Obama's United We Serve (www.serve.gov), which promote and find outlets for volunteerism.

Yankees vs. Orioles 7/21 Weather - Rain Gives Way To Playable Conditions - Postponement Unlikely

Well, if you look out your window, or on your favorite weather website, you are probably thinking that tonight's game is going to be a washout. Luckily, that is not the case. Steve from NYNJPAWeather.com is here (as always) to update us about today's rain, and tonight's improving conditions:

Game Today: Start time 7:00 PM vs Baltimore

Wind Direction This EveningWind Direction This Evening (in from right/right center)

The steady rain will be over in the Bronx by the time the game is expected to start, however showers will still linger over the region. Through the game, expect overcast to broken cloud cover along with a continued yet diminishing threat of showers as the evening progresses. A delay in the game is possible, but drier conditions will prevail to allow for the game to be played. However, field conditions will not be optimal. Winds will be from the northeast through the game around 5 to 15 mph with gusts to 30 mph at times. This wind blows in towards home plate and will have an influence on fly balls. Temperatures will range from 66 to 69 degrees. Overall, tonight looks to be a bit damp and raw, so bring a light jacket and some rain gear.

The Rest of the Series: The Yankees finish their series with Baltimore tomorrow afternoon with a 1 PM start time. Dry conditions are expected for the most part early tomorrow afternoon. However the threat of a few isolated to scattered showers will return late in the afternoon and may have an impact on the later innings of the ball game. Temperatures will range from the upper 70’s to lower 80’s with a wind from the south around 5 to 10 mph.

Rest of the Home Stand:

Through the end of next week and into next weekend, the threat of showers and thunderstorms will likely complicate playing conditions as showers and thunderstorms will develop each afternoon. On the bright side, warm and humid conditions will prevail with temperatures a more summer-like range of the mid to upper 80’s for afternoon highs and temperatures falling into the 70’s in the evening. Winds through the period will generally come from the southwest ranging from 5 to 15 mph in general. This wind blows out towards center field, which should make some games rather interesting. So aside from the threat of showers and thunderstorms, which will be scattered, the conditions through the home stand will rather pleasant.

So, don't cancel those plans for tonight just yet!

Last night was another great night in the Bronx. Isn't it fitting that even the pitcher's duels are home run-fests? Two days in a row the Yankees win 2-1, and all of the runs come on solo home runs. Fun times.

If you are heading out to the game tonight, have fun. We'll be back in the house on Thursday night for the makeup game against Oakland. Check back here later today for any necessary late-breaking weather updates. Read the full post, after the jump

The Art Of Peter Max Replaced By Yankees Women's Team Store

Well, that didn't take long.

It looks as though "The Art Of Peter Max" store at the new Yankee Stadium has been unceremoniously replaced by a "New York Yankees Women's Team Store." Yup, its a slow news day. (Thanks to Stefmara on Twitter for the tip - follow her on Twitter if you are a Yankees fan!)

We have to admit - we never stepped foot in the Peter Max art studio. Every time we walked by we shook our heads and wondered what the hell it was doing at a baseball stadium. Now, the ladies in the crowd should be pleased - they have their very own store to buy hideous pink Yankees merchandise from!

What's the deal, Yankees? Couldn't strike a deal to open up an Alyssa Milano Touch Boutique like they did at Citi Field? Step your game up, Trost - Alyssa's team-themed jeans are a hit with the ladies!

Notre Dame vs. Army at Yankee Stadium In 2010

ATTENTION: NEW STADIUM INSIDER HAS MOVED TO NYYSTADIUMINSIDER.COM. FOR ALL OF THE INFORMATION YOU COULD EVER WANT ABOUT NOTRE DAME VS. ARMY AT YANKEE STADIUM , PLEASE VISIT OUR NEW AND IMPROVED WEBSITE!

Update (5:15 PM): Yankees.com has the official release - the field will go from center field to home plate, so those with seats behind the plate will be watching from behind the end zone.
As for tickets:
The Yankees will have an announcement in the future regarding ticket availability for the general public. Notre Dame expects to make tickets available to its contributing alumni and fans through its alumni lottery as it does with all other football games. Army will receive an allotment of tickets as the visiting team.
So, we'll see if Yankees season ticket holders do get a crack at pre-sale tickets in the coming months. The game is scheduled for November 20, 2010. Get your winter gear ready.

Some interesting news, via ESPN, apparently college football will be making its debut at Yankee Stadium next season:

Although the new ballpark is set up primarily for baseball, a football field will be set up with one set of goalposts near the Yankees dugout on the first-base side and the other set in left field.

Army and Notre Dame played each other at Yankee Stadium annually from 1925 to 1946, with one of the two schools being ranked No. 1 for each of the last four meetings at the famed baseball park. The most famous of those games probably was the 0-0 tie in 1946, when Army was ranked No. 1 and Notre Dame No. 2. The two teams last met at Yankee Stadium in 1969.

We here at NSI can't wait until they offer out a season ticketholder pre-sale for this first ever college football game at Yankee Stadium. We'll simply flip the tickets for well over face value to one of the many well off, insufferable Notre Dame "subway alumni" who live in the NYC area and make a little money on the deal.*

Sorry to offend any Domers who happen to read this site. We are as passionate about our Penn State Nittany Lions as we are about the Yankees, and the announcement of Charlie Weis lugging his fat ass around the field at Yankee Stadium is nothing short of sickening.

* We obviously won't do the same to an Army alum. They protect our freedom at home and around the globe. Read the full post, after the jump

UPDATED: The Boys Are Back In Town! Home Stand Weather Conditions - Rain Is In The Forecast

UPDATE (5:00 PM) - Another update from Steve
The strong thunderstorms that formed over the southern Mid Atlantic and over eastern Pennsylvania is producing an area of dry conditions over central New Jersey. While rain is expected, the brunt of the heavy rain over eastern Pennsylvania is moving north-northeast, which is parallel to the Bronx. While I do expect rain to be an issue for tonight, there is a slight chance this game may be started under dry conditions or at least with light showers. However, eventually the rain is going to win out for this evening. Bring an umbrella and a pocket full of cash because the food there isn’t cheap while you are waiting for the game to restart.
UPDATE (3:45 PM) - Bad news for the game tonight, according to Steve:
An area of heavy rain and embedded thunderstorms has developed over southern New Jersey and southeastern Pennsylvania this afternoon and is rapidly moving towards New York City and the Bronx. Rain can be expected this evening, heavy at times, along with embedded strong to severe thunderstorms. A lengthy delay or postponement is likely.
The Yankees return to the Bronx for an extended home stand, and Steve from NYNJPAWeather.com is here with a weather updates!

Game Today: Start time 7:05 vs Detroit

This evening, showers and thunderstorms will produce a threat for a delay or postponement of the game. The thunderstorms will

Wind Direction Today

Wind Direction Today

generally be concentrated to the west of the Bronx this evening, however a few strong thunderstorms will threaten to enter from the west and southwest. Otherwise, partly cloudy skies are expected. Winds will be from the south around 5 to 15 mph, veering to the southeast by the end of the game. This wind blows across the stadium from right field to left field. Other than the thunderstorms, I do not expect winds to be a significant impact to playing conditions. Widespread showers will approach the Bronx from the southwest towards the end of the game as a low pressure system approaches. Temperatures at the start of the game will range from the upper 70’s to lower 80’s and fall into the mid 70’s with humid conditions.

Rest of the Detroit Series:

High pressure will provide dry conditions and clear to partly cloudy skies for both the Saturday and Sunday games. Winds will be generally light from the west around 5 to 10 mph. Temperatures for both games will range from the upper 70’s to lower 80’s.

Rest of the Home Stand:

Through next week, the threat of showers and thunderstorms will likely complicate playing conditions as showers and thunderstorms will develop each afternoon.

As always, we'd like to thank Steve for helping us stay dry during this rainy summer! Read the full post, after the jump

The NSI Minor League Report: Two Big Debuts

Wednesday July 15

There were two debuts that had stellar results. Sam Black, a 7th round pick from Seton Hall, who reaches the mid 90's, pitched 5 shutout innings with 3 hits for Staten Island. Judd Golson a HS kid out of Alabama, who is as fast as Brett Gardner and is as tough as nails, played center for GCL Yanks. He went 2 for 6 with 3 runs scored.

The AAA and AA leagues had their all star games. Austin Jackson went 1 for 3, with a triple, while Jesus Montero went 2 for 2, but had 4 stolen bases against and a passed ball.

Neil Medchill has homered in 3 consecutive games and leads the NY Penn League in homers by two. Keith Law of ESPN had interesting comp on Jesus Montero, since he generates so much power and swings off his front leg, like The Big Hurt, Frank Thomas. It was meant as a mechanical comp, not necessarily a 521 career home run prediction.

Where Have You Gone, Stadium Insider?

I typically don't break the "Stadium Insider" character, but I just thought I would pop in and let everyone know about the recent blog hiatus. In the past month or so, I have gotten engaged as well as taking a vacation. Further, work has been rather hectic (you know - the real job that pays my bills and allows me the luxury of going to Yankee Stadium and spending my money on bad food).

I may have created lofty expectations in the offseason and in April/May when I was scheduling posts so that there were multiple posts spread throughout the day. Our traffic numbers from those months indicated that the readers were embracing the posts - in April we had nearly 100,000 page views! Unfortunately, working 9 AM until at least 6 PM takes a lot out of you, the ideas haven't been flowing off of the fingertips as freely, and I haven't been seeking out stories. If anyone can tell me how to add a few hours to my day, please contact me immediately.

For anyone who already doesn't follow me on Twitter, you can do so at Twitter.com/StadiumInsider. Posting updates there is pretty easy since they are only 140 characters - you'll notice that I check in a lot. I can also be reached via the contact link at the top of the page if you have any story ideas - I'll welcome the opportunity to be lazy and have a story dropped into my lap every once in a while!

I have some stories planned for the second half - best standing room only spots in the stadium, NYY Steak review, etc. As always, when bad weather inevitably hits the area and affects your trip to Yankee Stadium, I'll be here with updates from Steve DiMartino of NYNJPAWeather.com. I can't promise many posts, but I can promise that this blog won't just fade away into an obscure corner of the interwebs. Meanwhile, if you long for the type of material that we were putting out day after day in April and May, I would recommend checking out The Mets Police. They are officially a Mets Blog, but they have a season ticket plan at Yankee Stadium and are pretty much the Citi Field Stadium Insider. Highly recommended reading.

To anyone who still checks back here daily, I truly appreciate the patience and loyalty. To anyone who has ripped me in the comments section for not posting regularly, I am flattered by your readership. Hopefully this case of writer's block/blogging apathy will subside soon and I'll be back filling all of your quotas. In the meantime, please enjoy Yanks27's NSI Minor League Report, Bobby's Yankees book reviews and Nick's occasional stadium insider ramblings (his writing style resembles mine, so be sure to check the tagline at the bottom of the post to check on the author).

For the record, here are my second half Yankees predictions - Joba is going to turn around his season, Phil Hughes will enter the rotation in dominant fashion, A-Rod will make a run at the MVP award, and the Yankees will edge the Red Sox for first place. If A.J Burnett can have a month of dominance in October like his month of dominance in June, the Yankees will be playing in the Fall Classic. I have a feeling in my bones, people. Republicans are out of office, Moose is no longer doing an admirable job as one of the more underrated Yankees hurlers of all time (curse of the Moose), and the Yankees finally have a viable pitching staff. Our 8 year drought will be over in three and a half months and we'll be planning a tickertape parade down the canyon of heroes. You heard it here first. Read the full post, after the jump

Book Review - Munson: The Life and Death of a Yankee Captain

Marty Appel took his first crack co-authoring a Thurman Munson autobiography in 1977. "Can you make it funny?", Thurman asked Appel. "Sure, give me more funny stories." It turned out to be a more "traditional" version of an autobiography than Appel had signed on for.

Now in his second Munson book in 32 years (in stores this past Tuesday), Appel, a Yankee PR man from 1968 to 1977, really has the goods on Munson. I wasn't yet born when Thurman Munson passed away, but after reading Appel's account, really just a series of stories from friends, family, teammates and acquaintances, I feel gypped that I never got to see him play for myself.

I've grown up rooting for two clean-cut Yankee captains, Don Mattingly and Derek Jeter. So imagine my surprise to learn that just 30 years ago, the Yankee captain was a man who dressed in polyester on and off the field, had nicknames like "Tugboat," and "Beer Can," and responded to being booed at Stadium by flipping off the Yankee faithful. Goose Gossage says that when he'd come in to close out the game, Munson would greet him politely at the mound: "Hey f*ckhead, how are you gonna lose this one?" I wonder if Posada ever said that to Mariano...

Appel's book gives the fans an insight to Munson that he never could while Munson was alive, both the good and the bad. He once went 11 days without shaving during the season--a big Yankee no-no. He demanded that in his contract, there be a clause so that no matter who the Yankees acquired, Munson would always be the highest paid player on the team. And he loved the serenity that came with flying his own planes--a hobby he picked up to spend more time at home with his family.

Reading this book is a treat, even for a younger generation of fans who only know names like Bobby Murcer (the man I was named after) and Lou Piniella for their work in baseball after their playing days. Some of the stories are so good that I almost felt like Appel was cheating for being so well-connected with the Yankees, having been in their employ during some of the truly great what-it-means-to-be-a-Yankee kind of years.

Marty Appel is a pro, and it's apparent in Munson. The first half of the book is a connected series of anecdotes from Thurman's formative years and playing career. The second half winds down with lucid, but not gruesome details about the crash from the two other passengers that survived the crash, teammate reactions, life after Thurman Munson, and really just a lot of powerful stuff that not too many authors would have had such easy access to.

We don't love the term "True Yankee" here at NSI, but if there ever was one, it was Thurman Munson. Read the full post, after the jump
